The Better Hearing Australia organization was founded in Victoria in 1932. Better Hearing Brisbane was established in 1947 by deafened and hard of hearing individuals in response to the need to meet together in order to provide information, support, understanding and opportunities to acquire knowledge and better communication skills to deal with the problems caused by loss of hearing.

Providing Hearing Loss Rehabilitation

Better Hearing Australia Brisbane Inc (BHA) is a not-for-profit, self help organisation, controlled by members and providing support service and assistance for people with hearing loss, their family and friends.

BHA fills the gaps in services provided by audiometrists, audiologists and hearing aid suppliers. It is the only agency in Brisbane catering for the needs of people with acquired hearing loss through Hearing Loss Management Courses, Information Sessions and advice.

In many cases, hearing problems are not confronted because the hearing impaired person may be unaware of what can be done to offset and limit the difficulties that hearing loss imposes.

Hearing loss affects every aspect of life and lifestyle. By seeking assistance, you will not only help yourself in many ways but also the people who may be frustrated by attempts to communicate with you. Better Hearing Australia offers a range of services for anyone with an acquired hearing loss.

Staff or volunteers can offer help concerning your hearing loss and provide options for your consideration. These might include:

INFORMATION

Better Hearing Australia Brisbane Inc receives government funding from Queensland Health and Disability Services Queensland to enable it to respond five days a week to enquiries and to meet the demand for information regarding hearing impairment and other disorders of the ear.

Printed information on aspects of hearing loss is available and includes:

  • TV and VCRs and DVDs (Teletext and Captions)
  • Captioning generally
  • Assistive Listening Devices
  • Cochlear Implants
  • Tinnitus (head noises)
  • Meniere’s disease
  • Acoustic Neuroma
  • Pharmaceutical drugs and hearing loss

ADVOCACY

BHA encourages its members to be pro-active in seeking better services for the hearing impaired.

SUPPORT

BHA recognizes the importance of peer support as part of regaining confidence in participating in the community and includes activities in its program to encourage personal interaction and better communication.

TRAINING

Better Hearing has its own Training Course for Hearing Loss Management Tutor / Facilitators. All classes in hearing rehabilitation are facilitated by these tutors accredited by the School of Aural Rehabilitation (SOAR), Better Hearing Australia Inc.
