All activities take place in a friendly relaxed environment. An affordable fee is charged in accordance with type of service.

Programs

Programs in Hearing Loss Management are conducted by Better Hearing Australia Brisbane Inc.

They include hearing loss management, information sessions and social activities.

The programs assist people who are hearing impaired to better manage their hearing loss.

Classes in Hearing Loss Management

Introduction to Understanding / Managing Hearing Loss
A short course of 4 x 2 hours offered each term. A course that helps you to better understand and manage your hearing loss and learn ways in which you can help yourself.

Basics of Speechreading / Lipreading
A short course of 4 x 2 hours offered each term on the basics of sight-assisted communication.

Speechreading Practice Group
A regular weekly group which meets for 1 hour every Tuesday in the term to practice lipreading and explore best communication practice. A self-help group run by members themselves.

Signed Communication
Signing is a means of communication using hand formations (shapes,
orientation and movement), facial expressions, gestures (body language) and lip patterns to convey meaning.

A manual alphabet (fingerspelling) is also used, mostly for proper nouns (names of people, places etc), technical or specialised vocabulary.

Signing facilitates the communication process between the hearing
impaired person and family and friends, in everyday situations.

Supplementary Sessions

Supplementary sessions can include a range of exercises, discussions and information on various aspects of hearing loss, including:

• the ear and the hearing process
• lipreading and communication strategies
• hearing loss and stress
• hearing aids and other devices for better hearing
• assistive listening devices
• other relevant topics

Information Sessions

Regular information sessions are presented at BHA headquarters featuring specially invited speakers on topics of interest to the hearing impaired.

Social

Better Hearing Social Club
Meets each month for daytime functions.

HIP Social Club (Hearing Impaired People and Partners)
Meets each month for evening and weekend functions.
